Research

The Academy promotes research, interdisciplinary projects, digitalisation and young talent, as well as visibility through publications.

In the field of research, the Academy combines long-term fundamental research with the development of reliable knowledge and data infrastructures. Its guiding principle is the combination of excellence with cultural responsibility: accessing sources, preserving knowledge, making it digitally accessible, and applying it to new research questions. Working in an interdisciplinary and independent manner, it engages in dialogue with society and the political sphere, supports early-career researchers and, through transparent communication, strengthens trust in science and democracy. It also creates spaces for dialogue and consultation on controversial issues of the future and prioritises deliberative classification over prescriptive guidelines.

The Academies' Programme

The joint research programme of the science academies – the Academies' Programme – serves to develop, preserve and research global cultural traditions. It is currently the largest long-term research programme in the Federal Republic of Germany for basic research in the humanities and social sciences and is coordinated by the Union of Academies. The programme is sponsored and administered by the eight academies affiliated with the Union of Academies and the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.

Digitality and digital research in the humanities and cultural sciences are particular areas of focus for the Academy. The development of innovative research approaches based on digital methods is just as much a part of the Academy's research as the sustainable and open provision of digital research resources and research data on our cultural heritage.
