Digital Academy

Our Digital Academy develops methods, infrastructure and services, and fosters the long-term sharing of knowledge.

Research Department for Digital Humanities

The Digital Academy’s research and activities range from providing conceptual advice on new applications and ongoing projects, through supporting Academy initiatives as part of evaluation processes, to securing funding for and carrying out its own research projects (e.g. funded by the BMBF, the DFG or the Volkswagen Foundation).

The training of early-career researchers on the ‘Digital Methodology in the Humanities and Cultural Studies’ programme is also a key area of activity for the Digital Academy. In addition, it acts as a research and development partner in numerous projects at the Mainz Academy, thereby ensuring the mutual, cross-project transfer of expertise as well as synergy effects with regard to the development of digital research tools.

Key Research Areas

The Digital Academy’s key research priorities include research software engineering in the humanities, with a particular focus on the development of quality and sustainability criteria, the use of current web technologies in cultural research contexts; the application of Linked Open Data and Semantic Web technologies to develop new analysis and reuse scenarios; the exploitation of research potential through the use of graph technologies and methods of historical network research; and the development of solutions for the analysis and visualisation of humanities-specific data and research subjects.
