The “Lessico Etimologico Italiano” (LEI) aims to place the vocabulary of Italo-Romania within a pan‑Romance framework. Starting from the etymon, the linguistic history of each individual word is researched, taking into account linguistic-geographical and socio-cultural contexts.

The underlying concept corresponds to that of Walther von Wartburg, as presented in the “Französische Etymologische Wörterbuch” (FEW) (French Etymological Dictionary) for Gallo-Romance (written language and dialects).

The two workplaces in Saarbrücken and Mannheim, Germany, are supported by several Italian part-time editors. Approximately 30 volumes are planned.
