The secrets of the Disibodenberg

Klosterruine Disibodenberg

08. August 2026

14:00

From 1985 to 1990, the first scientific archaeological excavations on Disibodenberg were carried out by the then State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments in Mainz.

Dr Eberhard J. Nikitsch from the Academy of Sciences in Mainz was responsible for publishing the more than 60 medieval gravestones that were found, translating their Latin inscriptions and thus piecing together numerous new pieces of the puzzle of the monastery's history.
Through his scientific research, he helped to locate Hildegard's first dwelling (the hermitage).
As an ‘insider’, Dr Nikitsch also knows many exciting details about the archaeology of the monastery ruins, which are considered to be among the largest in Germany.

After the tour, there will be an opportunity to take a guided tour of the museum.
