The numerous philosophical, theological and homiletic writings of the Saxon pastor Valentin Weigel (1533‑1588) initially circulated in manuscript form and were only partially printed at the beginning and end of the 17th century. Based on Lutheran‑Reformation piety, they combine, among other things, Neoplatonic and medieval‑mystical influences with Renaissance humanist ideas, the spiritualism of Sebastian Franck, and the philosophy of Paracelsus. Due to its lasting influence on later intellectual movements such as Rosicrucianism, Pietism with its pioneers, and German idealism, Weigel's oeuvre occupies a key position in the intellectual and ideological history of the early modern period.

The “Neue Edition” (New Edition) of Valentin Weigel's “Sämtliche Schriften” (Complete Writings), conceived as a 15-volume series, aims to make the most important texts of Weigel's corpus of writings available in a critical edition for research in various fields.
