The aim of the project “Propyläen. Forschungsplattform zu Goethes Biographica” (Research Platform for Goethe’s Biographica) is to develop an integrated research platform for Goethe’s Biographica and to complete the historical‑critical editions of Briefe von Goethe (GB) (Goethe’s letters), Tagebücher von Goethe (GT) (Goethe’s diaries), the Regestausgabe der Briefe an Goethe (RA) (regesta of letters to Goethe) – now enriched with a full‑text edition – and the edition of Goethe’s Begegnungen und Gespräche (encounters and conversations). Goethe's life testimonies provide information about his intellectual environment and the mutual impulses that were exchanged between the actors in Weimar, in the German-speaking world, in other European countries and beyond at a time when Europe and the whole world were undergoing fundamental change.

By making these sources available online, a significant new research potential opens up that cannot be matched by the printed editions alone, because for the first time documents of different source types, each with its own communicative dimension, can be examined together. This yields numerous fresh insights for Goethe scholarship as well as for historiography, cultural history and the history of science concerning the period from the mid‑18th to the mid‑19th century.

The platform is designed for the seamless integration of further source collections and scholarly findings, offering Goethe and Goethe‑era research a unique, sustainable central forum in the digital age.
