Plato is known to have had a unique influence on European philosophy, and at the same time he created linguistic works of art in his dialogues that are beyond comparison. Yet a modern complete translation and even more so an accompanying commentary are still lacking, and the task exceeds the capacity of any single scholar. Consequently, the present project has recruited a separate author for each of Plato’s dialogues, each of whom is recognised as competent in the relevant subject area. The new translations aim to be accurate and readable while also conveying the elegance of Platonic conversation. The commentaries are intended for readers without knowledge of Greek: they are intended to make the text accessible to today's readers, providing philological, historical and thematic notes and striving to make the argumentation and line of thought clear.
