The “Prähistorische Bronzefunde” (PBF) (Pre‑historic Bronze Finds) project, which has been funded by the German Research Foundation since 1966 and transferred to the Academy at the beginning of 2002, edits copper, bronze and early‑iron artefacts from the end of the 4th to the middle of the 1st millennium BC from Central Europe and its eastern peripheral areas, in particular, in corpus form. Where appropriate, objects of other materials (especially bone, precious metal and, in some cases, iron) are also incorporated. As part of the edition, the objects are presented and described in illustrations on a uniform scale, based on drawings of the originals where possible. This is accompanied by information on the location and site of discovery, the circumstances of discovery and accompanying finds, the place of storage and essential literature. The edition is based on a classification of the findings according to typological, functional, chronological and chorological criteria. The edition also endeavours to provide a more in-depth evaluation from a source-critical perspective and in terms of settlement, economic, social and religious history. The wide-ranging field of work means that the project can only be realised in collaboration with numerous colleagues and institutions from the countries covered.
