In the 16th century we encounter, particularly in Germany, the phenomenon of religious discussions as a means of denominational and political debate. Until 1539 (Leipzig), these initially took the form of scholarly and council disputes. Following the Imperial Diet of Augsburg (1530), we encounter, from 1540 onwards, imperial religious discussions in Hagenau, Worms and Regensburg in 1540/41. In Regensburg we encounter them again in 1546 on the eve of the Schmalkaldic War, and after the Peace of Augsburg in Worms in 1557 for the purpose of ‘religious comparison’ or restoration of religious peace. In order to capture the political and theological significance of these imperial religious discussions properly, an edition of the files and reports of these religious discussions is being compiled.
