Fridays for Culture: Sebastian Sternal "Thelonia"

Kalkhof-Rose-Saal

20. March 2026

19:00

"A dream, note by note. With his first solo album, Sebastian Sternal joins the ranks of the absolute top pianists. Eighteen pieces, all under five minutes and at least one minute long, come together – forgive me for using an old-fashioned word – gracefully to form an album. But this term fits perfectly: this music moves with a pleasant mixture of restraint and presence. It radiates dignity and strength, never imposes itself, and is so appealing that it is simply impossible to resist. Sternal is a virtuoso with a confident left hand, which often engages in contrasting dialogues with the right hand with its own independent melody. These tracks, which are also wonderfully balanced in terms of sound, resonate with the influences of jazz greats such as Art Tatum, Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea, but also those of the impressionists Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy. There's no question about it: “Thelonia” is a masterpiece." (Werner Stiefele, Rondo / Stereoplay, CD of the Month)
