Curriculum Vitae
  • Born in 1966 and raised on the North Frisian west coast
  • 1986–1990 Studied to become a teacher, specializing in history, German, and music, and earned a diploma in education in Heidelberg
  • 1997 Received doctorate in educational sciences (Dr. phil.) from the University of Heidelberg
  • 2003 Received habilitation in education, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Zurich
  • 2004 Appointed to a full professorship (C4) in general education at the University of Bielefeld
  • 2009 Appointed at the University of Zurich
  • 2011 Appointed to a research professorship in social pedagogy and family research at Goethe University Frankfurt


Research interests:

  • Childhood studies, particularly international comparative child well-being studies
  • Child poverty and vulnerability
  • Historical research on childhood, adolescence, and family
  • Research on sexualized violence in childhood


Positions held:

  • Among others, Dean of Studies and Vice-Rector for International Affairs and Communication (University of Bielefeld)
  • Vice-Dean for Research and Early Career Researchers 2015-2017 in Frankfurt
  • Since 2016 Chair of the Independent Commission for the Investigation of Child Sexual Abuse, Berlin
