  • 1990–91: Studied Japanese literature at Hiroshima University
  • 1991–1994: Studied Japanese and German at the University of Hamburg
  • 1998: Doctorate in Hamburg
  • 1998‒2004: Research assistant at the Department of Japanese Language and Culture at the University of Hamburg
  • 2004‒07: Research assistant at the Free University of Berlin, Japanese Studies, Department of Literature and Cultural Studies
  • 2007: Habilitation at the Department of History and Cultural Studies at the Free University of Berlin
  • Since 2007: W3 professorship at the Institute of Japanese Studies at Heidelberg University; main areas of research: Japanese literature up to the 19th century, rhetoric of Japanese poetry, gender issues, intertextuality, literary geography, translated literature
