  • 1992-2003 Research assistant and assistant professor in Frankfurt and Münster
  • 1997 Doctorate at the PTH Frankfurt-Sankt Georgen (in cooperation with Goethe University)
  • 2003 Habilitation in Medieval and Modern Church History at the University of Münster
  • 2004-2014 Professor of Church History at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main
  • Since 2014 University Professor of Medieval and Modern Church History at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.
  • Member of the Scientific Commission of the Commission for Contemporary History
  • Director of the Institute for Mainz Church History
  • Co-editor of the Journal of Modern and Contemporary Christianity
  • 2012-2020 Member of the DFG's Theology Review Board

Research interests: Theological censorship by the Roman Curia in the 16th and 19th/20th centuries, history of the modernism crisis in Catholicism, history of the Upper Rhine ecclesiastical province
