1997 Doctorate at the PTH Frankfurt-Sankt Georgen (in cooperation with Goethe University)
2003 Habilitation in Medieval and Modern Church History at the University of Münster
2004-2014 Professor of Church History at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main
Since 2014 University Professor of Medieval and Modern Church History at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.
Member of the Scientific Commission of the Commission for Contemporary History
Director of the Institute for Mainz Church History
Co-editor of the Journal of Modern and Contemporary Christianity

Research interests: Theological censorship by the Roman Curia in the 16th and 19th/20th centuries, history of the modernism crisis in Catholicism, history of the Upper Rhine ecclesiastical province
