We would like to announce an event organized by the Young Scientists Working Group of the Mainz Science Alliance, in which our Young Academy is participating: a fishbowl discussion on the topic of "Artificial Intelligence in the Academic World: Opportunities, Risks, and Ethical Concerns" on November 17, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. in the Old Cafeteria of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU).

Prof. Dr. Stefanie Acquavella-Rauch, Frauke Pirk, Prof. Torsten Schrade, and Michel Seiwert will discuss with journalist Carina Schroeder how artificial intelligence (AI) is changing academic work, highlighting both its opportunities and risks.

The discussion will focus on key questions concerning the responsible use of artificial intelligence in research: Should the use of AI in research be regulated? Can ethical standards and scientific integrity be maintained in a research environment shaped by AI? And how does AI-generated creativity differ from human creativity?

The fishbowl format promotes open dialogue between the participants and the audience: one seat in the discussion circle is left empty so that visitors have the opportunity to actively join the discussion at any time.

The event will be held in English and is open to all interested parties.

The fishbowl discussion is organized by the Young Scientists Working Group of the Mainz Science Alliance, which is dedicated to supporting young scientists at institutions in Mainz and is headed by Dr. Aglaia Schieke, coordinator of the Young Academy. It is being held in cooperation with the Gutenberg Graduate School of the Humanities and Social Sciences (GSHS) and the Department of History and Cultural Studies at JGU.
