Kalkhof-Rose Concert Hall

This is where the magic happens – Germany’s first chamber music hall built entirely of wood.

The Kalkhof-Rose Concert Hall at the Academy of Sciences and Literature | Mainz is a chamber music hall, unique in Germany, constructed entirely of wood. It opened in 2023 and offers excellent acoustics for chamber music and cultural events.

The Kalkhof-Rose Concert Hall was constructed entirely of timber by adding a storey to an existing part of the building. On this scale, it is unique in Germany as a chamber music hall. Specially developed acoustic panels ensure an exceptionally clear and warm sound.

The extension opens up a wide range of possibilities for the Academy to host musical and literary events. As the only academy of sciences in Germany with departments of literature and music, it can, among other things, organise lecture-concerts in connection with major music editions, which are overseen as long-term projects within the academy’s programme by the Mainz Academy. The thematic spectrum ranges from George Frideric Handel via Franz Schubert and Johannes Brahms to Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Bernd Alois Zimmermann.

At the same time, a new space is being created for established collaborations, for example with the University of Music (Mainz Music Lectureship), Villa Musica Rhineland-Palatinate (Hans Gál Prize) and the Mainz Composers’ Portrait.

A special Grand Piano for the Kalkhof-Rose Concert Hall

The Academy’s new chamber music hall required the purchase of a new grand piano, which could not be funded through public means. Thanks to the generous support of numerous donors, in particular the Academy Foundation and a crowdfunding campaign organised by Volksbank Darmstadt Mainz, the Kalkhof-Rose Hall has been equipped with a special instrument.

The hall features a Spirio Steinway grand piano (model B-211) equipped with digital technology. It enables concerts to be broadcast around the world and performances from all over the world to be streamed, thereby opening up new opportunities for international musical collaboration.

Further information and technical details on Spirio technology can be found on the Steinway & Sons website.
