LUX – Pavillon der Hochschule Mainz, Ludwigsstraße 2, 55116 Mainz

29. April 2026

16:00 – 18:00

Students on the Master’s programme in Digital Methodology in the Humanities and Cultural Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz kindly invite you to their upcoming afternoon event: Work in Progress: Current Project Work from the Master’s Programme in Digital Methodology.

Join us for an afternoon dedicated to digital innovation in the humanities and cultural studies. Current research findings and creative approaches will be presented, demonstrating how modern technology enriches traditional disciplines.

What to expect:

1. Diversity in the project exhibition. The exhibition, which can be visited at LUX from 28 April to 2 May, covers the entire spectrum of digital applications. Discover:

  • Natural Language Processing applied to historical newspapers
  • Spatial data in academic game development
  • Data-feminist perspectives on early Romantic correspondence
  • Presenting the biographies of concentration camp prisoners through an interactive map tool
  • User-centred design of a prototype for a map tool within the Cultural Heritage Framework (CHF)
  • Versexplorer for the analysis of religious texts
  • Transformation of a digital Tuareg dictionary
  • Computer-assisted sentiment analysis of film synopses
  • Quantitative analyses of the dissemination of the novel in Germany
  • Exploration interface for cultural data using hierarchical standardised data

2. In-depth insights into methods and tools. We look beneath the surface and show you which research approaches and challenges are shaping the science of tomorrow:

  • Distant reading approaches for computer-assisted text analysis
  • Interactive maps that offer new ways of experiencing space
  • The visualisation of family relationships using knowledge graphs
  • Modern web development in an academic context

3. Practical research and problem-solving. Using concrete applications, we demonstrate the use of powerful technologies such as Google Colab, MapLibre, neo4j, OpenRefine, Oxygen XML Editor, Python, QGIS, SQL aggregations, Visual Studio Code and Vue front-ends. The focus is not only on the results, but also on critically engaging with methodological challenges.
