Symposium on the topic of ‘Justice and AI’

Plenary Hall of the Academy

29. May 2026

10:00 – 14:00

On 29 May, the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Justice is hosting a symposium on the topic of ‘Justice and AI’. The symposium will take place at the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz as part of a cooperation agreement. Participation is possible upon separate invitation by the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Justice.

The transformations in the world of work brought about by artificial intelligence do not stop at the criminal justice system. Does the use of AI fundamentally change criminal proceedings? What opportunities, but also what risks, does the use of AI entail? What scope for action and limits does the applicable law provide? What are the current developments – and how should they be assessed? And where will humans remain irreplaceable in the future?

These and other questions will be addressed in keynote speeches by Prof. Dr Christian Rückert (University of Bayreuth), Dr Benjamin Krause (Frankfurt am Main Attorney General's Office), Dr Erik Weiss (University of Cologne) and Dr Matthias Müller (Rhineland-Palatinate State Criminal Police Office). They will then discuss their theses in a panel discussion. Moderator: Prof. Dr Claudius Geisler (Academy of Sciences and Literature | Mainz).
