Innovation with AI? Hack Day for machine learning in the humanities

Plenarsaal

Start

End

Here you have the opportunity to get hands-on experience working with machine learning (ML) in the field of cultural heritage as part of a team. Whether it's music, images, texts, or graphs, from small AI to large language models: using concrete data and challenges from the academic environment, various small groups will develop, test, and discuss solutions in a relaxed atmosphere over the course of 23 hours.

Anyone who wants to get involved or just dip their toes in is welcome—from beginners to professionals, from outside perspectives to domain experts. Together, we want to explore ML as a normal technology, beyond marketing speak and practical use. In doing so, we will gather experience across project and hierarchy boundaries on advantages and disadvantages, as well as new approaches and problems. In addition to the challenges, short impulses are also available for technical breaks and critical reflection, including on:

  • ML process
  • Pre-annotation and post-editing
  • Result validation
  • Digital sovereignty
  • Data protection considerations
  • Legally compliant use
  • Environmental impact assessment
  • Reproducibility

All you need is a work device; the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz will provide catering, electricity, Wi-Fi, and (as far as possible) computing capacity.
Are you up for the challenge?
