Exhibition and discussion: “An Infinitely Dark Legacy” with Jens Temmen and Lewis Bush

Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur | Mainz

29. January 2026

18:00

The current space industry, which is increasingly dominated by private companies, raises questions about the ethical costs of scientific progress, which already shaped the origins of modern space travel in the Nazi V2 rocket program.

British photographer Lewis Bush uses archive images and new photographs of partially forgotten rocket construction sites in Germany to remind us of the fascist roots of modern space travel. The exhibition, curated by Lewis Bush together with Prof. Dr. Jens Temmen (Professor of American Studies at KU Eichstätt-Ingolstadt and alumnus of the Young Academy | Mainz), also invites reflection on the ethical questions associated with this topic.

On January 29 at 6:00 p.m., interested parties can explore these topics in greater depth during a panel discussion with the two curators and a guided tour of the exhibition with the photographer (both in English). The exhibition can also be viewed on January 28 (12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.), January 29 (9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.), and January 30 (9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.).
