Project Description

Schubert-Wanderer-2.jpg
Title page of the first printing of Franz Schubert's Lieder op. 4 (Der Wanderer, Morgenlied, Wanderers Nachtlied), published by Diabelli, Vienna 1821 (Musicological Institute of the University of Tübingen)

The New Schubert Edition is a scholarly-critical edition of all the works of Franz Schubert (1797-1828). Its 84 volumes are arranged in eight series according to groups of works and include a catalogue of works, biographical documents and source catalogues. Each volume of music lists the most important sources and readings in an appendix and is supplemented by a separate critical report.

The New Schubert Edition aims to provide a text that will serve scholarship and musical practice at the same time. This text is compiled on the basis of all accessible sources. Insights into Schubert's compositional process and the genesis of individual works are provided by the edition of all surviving drafts and fragments.

Several versions of many of Schubert's compositions have survived. As an "open edition", the New Schubert Edition seeks to make all versions and variants of a work accessible. It provides modern interpreters with information on the performance theory of the early 19th century. Versions arranged for performance, from the composer's circle, are included in the appendix of the music volumes and offer the opportunity to become acquainted with changes and ornamentations that were common in Schubert's time.

Since 1965, the New Schubert Edition has been produced at two workplaces in Tübingen and Vienna. It is funded by the Federal Republic of Germany, the State of Baden-Württemberg, the Republic of Austria and the City of Vienna. The international project is supervised by the Academy of Sciences and Literature, Mainz, and the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Vienna.
