Project Description

The most important sources for the study of the Renaissance are the thematically rich writings of the humanists. The project of the Indices to Latin Literature of the Renaissance (ILLR) aims to index both the Latin and the Volgare works of Italian, especially Florentine, Renaissance authors between 1300 and 1600. In addition to the name index, the geographical index and the author index, the texts are made available and easily accessible above all through the highly differentiated subject index. This literature, which in many cases is only available in editions of the humanist period and is thus virtually inaccessible like an uncut book, is of fundamental importance for the study of the philosophy, historiography, philology, art, and politics of this epoch. In 1992, the first volume to appear was the index to Coluccio Salutati (1331-1406), a central figure of the early Renaissance. This was followed in 1998 by the index to Cristoforo Landino (1424-1498). The work of Marsilio Ficino (1433-1499) will be indexed in 3 index volumes; the first volume, which includes the index of names and authors and the index geographicus, has been completed. Volumes II and III will provide the subject index to the entire Corpus Ficinianum.

To complement the printed index volumes, a CD-ROM version is in progress; it will include both the text of the authors treated (initially Coluccio Salutati and Landino) as well as the ancient sources and the indexes themselves. In this way, the texts and the indices of all the authors treated will be completely available to the user at the touch of a button.
