The Augustinus-Lexikon (AL) is a multi-volume dictionary of terms on Augustine, his life and thought, his work, persons associated with him and his contemporary context (places, things and circumstances of social, political, cultic as well as cultural importance) comprising about 1200 lemmas. The concepts characteristic of Augustine's thought are presented taking into account both the Christian and the pagan-ancient tradition. In order to ensure the highest possible degree of authenticity, the AL uses only Latin keywords taken from Augustine's language. The articles are published in German, English or French in double fascicles by the publishing house Schwabe AG. In addition to the usual indexes, an index volume will make the complete work accessible in three languages under various modern questions.

The first volume was published in 1986-1994 and contains the 192 articles Aaron - Conuersio. In 1996-2002 the 171 lemmata Cor - Fides of the second AL volume were published, as well as a critical index of Augustine's works and their significant editions (including all letters and sermons). Volume 3 was presented in 2004-2010 with the 238 lemmata Figura(e) - Mensura as well as an update of the index of works. Between 2012 and 2018, Volume 4 was published with the 248 lemmas Meritum - Sacrificium as well as a completely revised ›List of Augustine's Works and their Editions‹.

With the completion of AL 4, a digital version of the Augustinus-Lexikon was presented at the same time, the ›AL-online‹: It is a structured full-text database with convenient search, navigation and export options.

AL 5,1/2 published volume 5 in 2019 and contains the 40 lemmas Sacrificium offerre - Sermones (ad populum).

In preparation is the double fascicle 5,3/4; this will lead the AL up to the lemmas with the initial letter 'T'.

Symposia, such as the Augustine Study Day, which has been held annually since 2003 in cooperation with the University of Würzburg, the results of which are published in the series Cassiciacum. Res et signa, and the regular Augustine Reading Seminar serve both the exchange of ideas and experiences among the international and interdisciplinary authorship and the presentation of new research results to a broader public.

Prof. Dr. Robert Dodaro was President of the Istituto Patristico Augustinianum in Rome, a department of the Pontificia Università Lateranense, which at the same time works closely with the Università degli Studi di Roma ›La Sapienza‹. International Incontri di Studiosi dell'Antichità Cristiana are held annually in May. Regular publications include the journal Augustinianum and the series Studia Ephemeridis Augustinianum.

Prof. Dr. Christof Müller is Scientific Director of the Center for Augustine Research at the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (ZAF), which provides an extensive range of services for Augustine research via the Internet portal www.augustinus.de. This includes the Corpus Augustinianum Gissense (CAG), a digital complete edition of Augustine's original works in a lemmatized EDP text corresponding to the latest state of research, as well as an index of secondary literature oriented at the lemmatal list of the AL (current status: over 33,000 titles), which have been available online since 2013.

The ZAF, in cooperation with the patristic institutes of the University of Heidelberg and the University of Tübingen as well as the Würzburg Classics Department, organized an interdisciplinary workshop on the edition situation of the Augustinian epistolary corpus in Würzburg from August 20-22, 2012, funded by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation (conference report). Similarly funded international workshops dealt with »Unkindness and Polemics in Augustine's Letters« in 2016 (conference report), »Sociological Questions and Models in the Context of the (Augustini) Epistulae« in 2017, and »What is an ›Augustini epistula‹? Studies on the constitution of the Augustinian epistolary corpus« in 2018.

On the occasion of the XVII International Conference on Patristic Studies in Oxford, ZAF organized a two-day international workshop on the Augustinian epistolary corpus entitled »Text - Subtext - Context. On the Way to a Comprehensive Commentary of the Augustinian Letters« in August 2015 (conference report).

After the Augustine Study Day 2016 had been dedicated to the topic »Dialogue and Dialogues - From Plato to Augustine«, the 15th Augustine Study Day on May 19, 2017 was dedicated to the commemoration of the Reformation: »Augustine and Luther. On the kinship of two ›church fathers‹«. In 2018, the motto was »Learning, Teaching, Leading. Augustinian Ways in Societal and Church Educational Spaces«. The 17th Augustine Study Day 2019 dealt with »Word - Truth - Lie. Augustine and Language«.

The project is funded by the federal and state governments as part of the Academies Program.
